Importing the configuration information of computers

It is possible to import the configuration of the computers forming your network. To do this, go to the menu “Tools > Update the configuration of all computers”, and specify your Octopus user name and password.

Microsoft’s WMI component is used to obtain a computer’s configuration information.

Microsoft’s WMI component is part of Windows 2000 and higher operating systems.

For computers running Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, click here to display the procedure and script to use in order to automate the deployment of WMI.

To access a computer’s WMI component, you must have administrative rights on that computer.

Please note that the default installation of Windows Server 2003 does not include the WMI component.

To install WMI on Windows Server 2003 you must:

1 – Go under “Windows Add / Remove Programs”

2 – Click on “Windows Components”

3 – Click on “Management and Monitoring Tools”

4 – Click on “Details”

5 – Check the “WMI Windows Installer Provider” box

Here is a list of the information that will be imported:

o        MAC address;

o        Hard drive capacity;

o        Network adapter, display adapter;

o        Manufacturer;

o        RAM;

o        Model;

o        Serial number;

o        Operating system;

o        Processor type;

Several thousands of attributes are available via WMI.

If there are other configuration attributes which you would like to have, let us know; contact us.

To cease obtaining the configuration attributes of a given computer (ex: UNIX server), uncheck the “Activate configuration detect via WMI” option.

In order to maintain the configuration information of computers up to date, you must run the application on a regular basis.

Use the Windows task manager (Windows Scheduler) to automate the application’s execution. See the Procedures to automate the import of computers and configurations page for help pertaining to task creation.
